Mătasea este foarte fină, se obține din crisalida omidei Bombyx, ce secretă cca. 800-900 m de fir.
În China se creșteau viermi de mătase din anul 2600 î.Hr. Țesăturile din mătase erau foarte scumpe în acele vremuri, de aceea firele erau folosite în special pentru broderii.
Mătasea este foarte mult apreciată și astăzi, creațiile vestimentare din mătase arată impresionant, cele mai renumite sunt rochiile de mireasă din mătase naturală.
